Wu has worked his way from “Background Oriental Male” to “Dead Asian Man” to “Generic Asian Man Number Three/Delivery Guy” - a long way from “Kung Fu Guy,” which is where he wants to be…Yu’s novel may seem topical. “Interior Chinatown” posits that we are reading a teleplay about Chinatown - specifically the Golden Palace restaurant, which is the setting for a cop show called “Black and White.” Through his protagonist, Willis Wu - who has a small part on the show - Yu explores in devastating (and darkly hilarious) fashion Hollywood’s penchant for promoting clichés about Asians and Asian-Americans. She’s wonderfully described as a suburban vamp with lots of S.A.Īs the title implies, this is an epistolary novel, not my favourite structure but it is addictive. Harrison is a fussy, mild-mannered accountant – sounds perfect for a 1920s murderer – and his wife Margaret is much younger. When the story begins, their top floors are newly leased to two young men, an artist and an aspiring novelist. The setting is the London suburb of Bayswater in 1928, where the Harrisons live in a tall Victorian house with their lady-help, Miss Agatha Milsom. On the left side of the book are "thinker" poems that light up the analytical, more literal, left side of the brain, and on the right side are companion "feeler" poems that speak to the creative, more emotional right side of the brain. In Self Love Poetry, Godfred explores concepts like authenticity, surrender, resilience, gratitude, believing in yourself, and of course, love, through 100 pairs of poems, each dedicated to a central theme. Now, Self Love Philosopher Melody Godfred shares her first poetry book, Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers & Feelers, a collection of 200 thought-provoking and heart-opening self love poems. Readers have called her work "life changing," "pandemic medicine," and "part of my daily ritual." Oprah Magazine and the Today Show have featured her work for its timely, uplifting wisdom. ![]() |
